Happy Birthday Princess

A visit to Union Dining in Swan St., with good friends, was a birthday celebration for the Princess and a most enjoyable evening it was, too.  The restaurant is European in style and partners Adam & Nicky (from a Stephanie Alexander background) have created a stylish, but relaxed atmosphere with good service and great food.  The menu is essentially European and the wine list gathers a mix of continental and Victorian offerings.  We started with a Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc - quite light and inoffensive (except for its price) and followed with a Moortangi Estate Heathcote Shiraz - a very enjoyable drop.  The Princess enjoyed a terrine for entree, then a slow cooked bunny for main - very tasty!  My entree was a Kingfish carpaccio with horseradish cream and green chilli (absolutely delicious) followed by an aged scotch fillet, beautifully cooked.  Mains need to be augmented with sides of vegetables which make the meal quite expensive, but no less enjoyable.
A steady stream of Pies supporters walking away from the MCG along Swan St, at what must have been no more than three-quarter time, alerted me to the news of a poor display from our boys in black and white!

"A Cook's Life"

A great experience this week - Thursday evening we attended the launch of Stephanie Alexander's new book - an autobiography - "A Cook's Life".  The launch and signing was at Readings Book Store and we thoroughly enjoyed Stephanie's presentation, including the free Brown Brothers' Prosecco.  Stephanie is just as down to earth as she presents on TV and is a fine speaker with a warts and all story to tell.  An absolutely delightful evening!

On the way home we stopped off at the new (6 months old) cafe in Ashburton - the Oak Room - a great modern-Thai menu and the food was delicious and quite inexpensive.  Fortunately, we'd brought with us a bottle of Pepik Pinot Noir, which we thoroughly enjoyed.  This place was written up in the coffee guide as having the best coffee in the east - we'll definitely be going back!  http://oakroom.com.au
